Strong Tremors Cause Damage and Injuries
Taiwan
Two strong earthquakes shook Taiwan's eastern coast early Tuesday local time, with one offshore quake measuring 6.1 magnitude and another inland quake measuring 5.8 magnitude. The quakes caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure, and there have been reports of injuries. Aftershocks continue to rattle the region, with a preliminary magnitude 4.0 aftershock striking just southwest of the main shocks.
Alaska
A cluster of earthquakes struck Alaska's Adak Island early Wednesday, with the strongest measuring 5.8 km WSW of Adak. There were no reports of damage or injuries, but residents were advised to be prepared for aftershocks.
Papua New Guinea
A magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck a remote area of Papua New Guinea on Thursday, killing at least three people and destroying nearly 1,000 homes. rescuers are working to reach those affected by the quake, but difficult terrain and communication challenges are complicating their efforts.
New Jersey
A rare magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck northern New Jersey on Friday, making it the third-strongest earthquake to strike the state in recorded history. The quake caused minor damage and there were no reports of injuries.
