ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington unexpectedly resigned Friday, saying it was time for a change.
Washington, who has led the Rangers to two World Series appearances in his eight seasons as manager, said he made the decision after meeting with general manager Jon Daniels on Thursday night.
"I just felt like it was time for a change," Washington said. "I've been here eight years, and I just felt like it was time for a change. I think it's time for a new voice in the clubhouse, and I think it's time for me to step aside."
Washington's resignation comes as the Rangers are struggling through a disappointing season. They are 67-75 and in last place in the AL West, and they have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Washington said he is not sure what he will do next, but he plans to take some time off to spend with his family.
"I'm going to take some time off and just relax," Washington said. "I'm going to spend some time with my family, and then we'll see what happens."
