Former Trump Aide Mark Meadows Seeks Immunity from Georgia Election Interference Case

Subpoenaed by House Committee, Meadows Faces Contempt

Former White House Chief of Staff Argues for Recognition of Subordinate Immunity

Mark Meadows, former chief of staff to President Donald Trump, has filed a request with the Supreme Court seeking recognition of immunity for presidential subordinates. Meadows' request comes as he faces a contempt vote in the House of Representatives for refusing to cooperate with a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

In his request to the Supreme Court, Meadows argues that the "separation of powers doctrine" prohibits the legislative branch from subpoenaing and punishing executive branch officials. He points to an exchange during a hearing between a Justice Department lawyer and Judge William M. Ray II of the Northern District of Georgia, who rejected an effort by Meadows to have his case moved into federal court.

Meanwhile, Meadows is also facing charges in Georgia related to his alleged attempt to overturn the state's 2020 election results. He is one of 18 individuals charged with racketeering and conspiracy, and his trial is scheduled to begin on Monday. The House Select Committee has also voted unanimously to hold Meadows in contempt for refusing to cooperate with its subpoena.
