Solar Storm Watch: G5 Geomagnetic Storm Expected to Hit Earth

Warning Issued by NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center

High Latitudes at Risk for Aurora Alerts

As a result of a solar storm, a G5 geomagnetic storm is expected to hit Earth on Friday. The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a Severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm Watch, warning of potential disruptions to power grids, communications, and navigation systems.

The storm is expected to produce intense aurorae at high latitudes, including regions of Alaska, Canada, and Scandinavia. The aurorae may be visible even as far south as the northern United States.

NOAA space weather forecasters have observed at least 20 X-class solar flares in the past week, including two X2.6 flares on Thursday. These flares have emitted large amounts of charged particles into space, which are now traveling toward Earth.

The G5 geomagnetic storm is expected to cause widespread power outages, disruptions to satellite communications, and problems with navigation systems. It is also possible that the storm could cause damage to electrical equipment.

The NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center is urging people in affected areas to take precautions, including having backup power supplies and staying informed about the latest forecasts.
